About St. Augustine's
St. Augustine, also known as Augustine of Hippo, was a great teacher, thinker, and spiritual leader whose ideas continue to inspire the world even today. Born in North Africa, he became one of the most important figures in early Christian history and a respected Bishop of Hippo.
He was known for his deep love for learning and his strong ability to express ideas clearly. Augustine believed that true education is not only about gaining knowledge but also about understanding life, values, and purpose. His journey from a curious student to a wise scholar shows the importance of dedication, discipline, and self-growth.
St. Augustine wrote several influential works that are still studied across the world. His teachings encourage critical thinking, moral responsibility, and the search for truth—values that are essential in education.
At St. Augustine Day School, we proudly follow the inspiration of our Patron Saint. His life reminds us to guide students not only towards academic success but also towards becoming responsible, thoughtful, and confident individuals.
Every year, we observe 28th August as our School Feast Day to honor his life and teachings. It is a special occasion for our school community to reflect on his values and continue our journey of learning with purpose.
History of the School
The St. Augustine Education Society was established in 1970 and the School in Barrackpore started operation in 1985, to bring up and groom children to meet different challenges of the modern era.
The school has been named after Saint Augustine, a great scholar of the Roman Catholic Church. The intent was to promote and disseminate knowledge for the development of the Anglo-Indian community along with other communities pursuing a desire for education in English medium based schools with a National and Catholic ethos.
St. Augustine's Day School, Barrackpore, is situated in the oldest cantonment area. Abundant greenery and the river Ganges near the school renders a serene atmosphere appropriate for a school. The St. Augustine Education Society, registered under the West Bengal Societies Act, 1961, runs and governs the school, which has Nursery to Class XII affiliated to the ICSE and ISC Board. The school is associated with the Anglo- Indian Schools in West Bengal; and has its own Managing Committee which deals with the improvement and development of the school.
